Our Mission

To inspire and provide training for individuals with Down syndrome who have inherent aptitude for the performing arts.

Our Focus

Company d focuses to enrich and heighten the dancers’ artistic growth and their cultural literacy by presenting age appropriate material within various social levels. Structuring classes to facilitate cognitive, social and personal growth for each dancer, Company d aims to provide a rich knowledge of classical techniques along with the ability to adapt to all styles and techniques of dance.

Company d members develop physically, cognitively and socially, not only learning dance techniques but also developing cultural awareness, communication skills and social maturity. Furthermore, Company d involves professional teaching artists in the areas of visual arts, theatre and music to broaden the arts education component. In turn, these relationships provide a connection with the artists, fosters inclusion and creates an awareness within a community of the dancer’s inherent abilities.

The Benefits

Company d develops self-esteem, self-advocacy self-confidence within the community of dancers through both the discipline and creativity of dance. Students in the program experience personal, social, emotional, and cognitive growth through the process of arts education.

Although Company d falls under the umbrella of dance, there is a continued focus in developing life skills, such as a commitment to a project, following complex directions, responding appropriately to corrections and learning how to work and move as one. Their “one movement” has in turn created fellowship and a support group among the parents.

The dancers have become role models for younger children with special needs and achieved greater levels of community involvement and acceptance. The program has also provided “typical” experiences for developing into mature adults. As a result, Company d is “one movement” that presents awe-inspiring performances and moves the hearts of its audiences.
